My Profile: Erika Almiron

Erika
Almiron

I was born in Philly, am a first generation Paraguayan American and lived in Brooklyn for several years before returning. I have been doing education organizing with the Philadelphia Student Union for several years and have been a part of the Media Mobilizing Project since it's birth.  In the past I have spoken at many universities on Latino issues from HIV/AIDS to teen pregnancy and have done political education workshops at Riverside Correctional Facility with youth incarcerated as adults through teaching students Spanish, music and poetry.  I have also documented, through photography, many issues of poverty from prison conditions on the Paraguayan/Brazilian border, living conditions for maquiladora workers on the Mexico/US border, mountain-top removal in West Virginia and it's devastating effects on the community, and homelessness and gentrification in Harlem.
