On Tuesday, 12/15/09, Representative Gutierrez (IL-4) introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act (CIR ASAP), also known as H.R. 4321, kicking off the congressional push for immigration reform. CIR ASAP is a "marker bill" or wish list of policies that Gutierrez wants in the actual bill(s) to be voted on in the next three to four months. Most of the Gutierrez policies would directly benefit many communities in greater Philadelphia. Specifically, there are recommended policy changes that would help families facing the deportation of a loved one; including barring the deportation of any individual who fled their country before the age of twelve and came to the U.S. as a refugee or aslyee, and permitting immigration judges to consider the best interests of a U.S. citizen child before ordering his or her parent deported. There are also other proposed changes that improve detention conditions and create more due process in the immigration court system. Finally, the proposals include strengthening families' abilities to re-unify and become citizens.

Because this is not the actual bill that will be voted on, we must act fast to pressure our Pennsylvania congressional delegation to support, and to support Gutierrez proposals in future bills. We need to show our strength. JUNTOS, Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia, and New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia have partnered with Reform Immigration for America to continue the push for just and humane immigration reform for families in our communities. On Tuesday February 2, 11:30AM we will be dropping off hundreds of signatures from our community members urging U.S. Representative Bob Brady to co-sponsor CIR ASAP. Please come out and support - 1907 South Broad Street. And don't forget to sign on and pass on the Philly for Family Unity Petition!

Immigration reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Joseph T. Hansen, International
President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union
(UFCW) and chair of the Change to Win Immigration Task Force, and John
Sweeney, International President of the AFL-CIO, today unveiled a
unified framework for comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

The joint announcement and proposal is a critical
sign of support for the Administration and Congress to address
immigration reform -- and to ensure that it remains a priority on the
legislative calendar. It is also an important sign that immigration
reform is an important part of economic recovery with it training.
