An invitation to dance

The City of Philadelphia announced "How Philly Moves" this week: a plan to create a nearly 50,000 square foot mural on the sides of the parking structures at the airport, celebrating the diverse facets of dance in Philadelphia.
The invitation to participate in this project is open to anyone and everyone who considers themselves a Philly dancer. There will be many opportunities to get involved with this large-scale project, but dancers need to be signed up by February 19th to be considered for the photo sessions in early March to generate more imagery for the installation.

Dear Mandela is a film produced by Christopher Nizza and Dara Kell -- film makers of Sleeping Giant -- about the struggles against displacement by South Africans living in shack settlements. Those of us whoparticipatedin last fall's round of video making classes with Our City Our Voices learned a lot from these film makers and the beauty of this particular film. Together, we also were able to reflect on the conditions in which the shackdwellers both live and struggle and how it relates to our lives in the US.

Thousands of people who come to Pennsylvania from other countries to work can't get driver's licenses. In December the state made hundreds of people who already had licenses give them up. At a meeting in Northeast Philadelphia, community members spoke about how this policy will affect their ability to earn a living and support their families.

I cringed when I saw the cover of this morning’s Philadelphia Daily News: the blurred back of an Asian man with the headline "The illegal world of ‘Mr. Cheng’."
