Nursing Home Workers Get Support From Occupy Philly

Workers at Presbyterian Inspired Care Nursing Home have been trying to settle their first labor contract for a year and a half. In this report we hear from one of the workers talking about the struggle. We also hear what Occupy Philly had to say to management.

MMP graduates its first two Computer Basics courses

 

Media Mobilizing Project is proud to announce the graduation of its first two basic computer skills classes this month. This marks an important step in our expanding initiative to connect communities across Philadelphia through digital literacy and community organizing.

In 6 week classes held in both English and Spanish, we worked with first-time computer users, who learned the basics of how to communicate and find information online, gaining a crucial skill for themselves and their communities.

On Wednesday evening, caregivers at Broomall Presbyterian Village, a nursing home in Broomall, Pennsylvania, voted to form a union with SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, which represents over 22,000 health care workers statewide.  These workers celebrated their first moments as proud union members by sharing their stories with Sharita Rollins, a certified nursing assistant from Philadelphia and a longtime member of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania.  She interviewed the workers and asked them what they hoped to win in their first union contract.

On Wednesday April 1st, hundreds of people with disabilities, seniors, and home care attendants are gathered in Harrisburg to ask for justice. For people with disabilities and seniors, that means the right to choose long term care support at home, rather than in nursing homes. For the home care attendants that help make the independence of thousands of Philadelphians possible, that means the right to get health care benefits and wages that can support a family.
