A key feature of any public education system is its purpose. Right now, a lot of people are putting forward the idea that the purpose of our schools is to prepare students to “compete in the global economy.” The proponents of this framework span the political spectrum, from Newt Gingrich to Barack Obama, but is it really the best thing for students?

Washington, D.C. On Friday, April 24, 2009, President Obama nominated two union-side lawyers to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which is the administrative agency that interprets and implements the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). The two new members, Craig Becker and Mark Pearce, both have extensive experience as union-side attorneys.

In honor of today's historic inauguration and yesterday being Martin Luther King day, I wanted to share with folks a piece NPR did on the Poor People's Movement.
