Yesterday afternoon, Fernanda and Cesar Marroquin, leaders of DreamActivist PA, were arrested at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, in a courageous stance against the unjust immigration policy enacted there and to demand full human rights for the people of Alabama and beyond.

Watch the video message from Fernanda explaining what her actions and presence in Alabama means for those across this country living in isolation and fear.  "I don't want people to lose hope. I want you to know that you are not alone.  That we are here for you.  And its time for all of us to come together and take a stand.  And to take a stand for our human rights.  For our dignity, our families and our communities".

As most of you know or have experienced personally, the continued collaboration between the Police Department and Immigration Authorities has created a culture of distrust between immigrants, citizens, and City officials.  This lack of tust has created serious issues around crime and security for immigrants and citizens alike within Philadelphia's diverse neighborhoods.

The following was written by the partner of one of the many Cambodian Refugees who was detained last Fall when the US government made an agreement with Cambodia to begin deporting refugees back to a country many of them don't even know. These men and women have been labelled 'criminal aliens' but in reality are hard-working Philadelphians who struggle like most everyday to put food on the table, keep a roof over their heads and give their children a better education than was afforded them.

From the Philadelphia Public School Notebook...

Organizers in support of the DREAM Act are calling senators to help get the 60 votes needed to pass the much-anticipated federal bill. After reaching the 10,000 phone-call mark on Thursday, activists now hope to make 5,000 more before the vote.

Just this week Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) announced that he would attach the bill as an amendment to theNational Defense Authorization Act. Another rider on the bill would begin a gradual repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy within the military. More>>>

On August 12th, Philadelphians gathered to protest the detention and deportation of Ly Hov Khol, a refugee of the Khmer Rouge Regime and an active member of Philadelphia's Cambodian-American community. Ly was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is now being held at a detention center out of state, awaiting his impending deportation to Cambodia. Watch a video of the August 12th protest.
